Health insurance contribution notice
Beitragsbescheid / Zahlungserinnerung der Krankenkasse · sent by Your Krankenkasse (TK, AOK, Barmer, DAK…)
Act now — this one has real deadlines
What this letter is
Either the routine annual notice of your contribution amount — or, more urgently, a reminder that student self-payer premiums are outstanding. Unpaid statutory health insurance is serious: coverage can be restricted and debts snowball with surcharges; for internationals it also endangers residence permit extensions (proof of insurance!).
What to do
- Routine notice? Check the amount (students: ~€120–145 base), file it. Contribution rates change every January — the letter explaining a small increase is normal.
- Payment reminder? Pay immediately or call them — Krankenkassen are genuinely cooperative with instalment plans, but only proactively.
- Amount seems wrong? (e.g. you turned 30, finished studies, income changed) — call before paying; status changes drive premium jumps and are often fixable retroactively.
- Direct debit failed because your account was empty? Fix the account and tell them — repeated failed debits trigger surcharges and manual invoicing.
