What this letter is
Arrives automatically once your first employer registers you for social insurance (or when your Krankenkasse triggers it). Contains your lifelong social security number (Sozialversicherungsnummer) — pension, unemployment and health systems all reference it.
What to do
- File it forever — future employers all ask for this number.
- Check your name and birth date are exactly right; report typos to your Krankenkasse (they cascade into pension records otherwise).
- Lost later? Your Krankenkasse or the Rentenversicherung reissues it free — but the folder is easier.
