My new bank account is frozen
The situation
Your fresh German account — often an app bank like N26 — is suddenly frozen or "under review". You cannot reach your money, a salary just bounced, and support only sends automated replies about "verification".
The way out
Frozen almost always means one verification box is unticked — not that you did something wrong. Answer it, precisely.
- Read every email and in-app message and supply exactly what is asked — usually your Steuer-ID (tax number / CRS self-declaration), proof of address, or the source of a large incoming transfer. Vague or partial answers keep it frozen.
- Never ignore a "verify your identity" request — a redone video-ident or a re-uploaded passport clears many freezes within days.
- A large deposit triggered it? Have a short paper trail ready (contract, blocked-account payout, family transfer). Banks must ask about unusual money, and a clean explanation reopens the account.
- Escalate in writing if support stalls: a firm, dated message naming the exact request and the harm (bounced salary, rent due) usually moves it. Keep records.
- Keep a small buffer at a second bank. App banks freeze fast and unpredictably; one backup account or some cash keeps a frozen account from also meaning missed rent.
Rule for next time: finish all verification — tax ID included — in the week you open the account, before any salary or blocked-account money lands.
