My degree or university isn't in Anabin
The situation
You checked the Anabin database for your visa or Blue Card application and your university isn't listed, has no rating, or shows "H+/-" — and now the embassy or employer wants proof your degree counts.
The way out
There's an official path for exactly this case:
- Search Anabin thoroughly first: try alternative spellings, the institution's local-language name, and former names — listings are inconsistent.
- "H+" institution + your degree type listed as equivalent: you're fine; print both database extracts for the application.
- Not listed, unclear, or "H+/-": request a Statement of Comparability (Zeugnisbewertung) from the ZAB (Central Office for Foreign Education) — €208, online application, processing up to ~3 months. This document settles the question for embassies, employers and the Ausländerbehörde.
- Start it the day you notice the gap — it's the classic hidden delay in work-visa timelines, and it runs fully in parallel with everything else.
- Regulated profession (medicine, nursing, teaching...)? You need professional recognition through the competent authority instead/in addition — the "Recognition in Germany" portal routes you to the right body.
- Nobody unofficial can "add" you to Anabin or sell a faster ZAB — anyone claiming otherwise is selling smoke.
