No visa appointment at the German embassy before I must arrive
The situation
You need a national (D) visa to start your studies or job, but the German mission in your country has no appointment slots for months — and your enrolment or contract start date is closing in.
The way out
Book relentlessly and document the deadline — missions prioritise time-critical cases.
- Book the moment slots open, and keep checking. Many missions release appointments in batches at fixed times, and cancellations reappear daily. Check every day, including odd hours.
- Use the correct channel only. Some missions book directly; others route through an official partner (VFS Global, TLScontact, iDATA). Use only the provider linked from the mission's own website — never a paid "agent" promising a slot.
- Deadline approaching? Email the visa section directly with proof — your admission letter or contract showing its start date — and ask for an expedited or time-critical appointment. Politely, in German or English, documents attached.
- Ask your university's international office or your employer's HR to send a supporting note; missions respond to institutional contacts.
- Studying? A short-stay Schengen visa is not a substitute — entering to study without the D visa usually means going home to re-apply. Do not let anyone talk you into it.
Rule for next time: start the visa process the day you receive your admission or contract — the appointment queue, not the decision, is the real bottleneck.
