Missed the semester fee — threatened with Exmatrikulation
The situation
The Rückmeldung deadline passed — maybe the letter went to an old address, maybe the payment reference was wrong — and now the university warns it will de-enrol you. Because your residence permit depends on enrolment, this is a status emergency, not just a university formality.
The way out
Act the same week — this is almost always recoverable early:
- Pay immediately, including any late fee (typically €20–30), using the exact payment reference from the letter or portal.
- Email the Studierendensekretariat the same day: payment proof attached, one-line explanation, ask them to confirm your enrolment continues. Registrars process late payers constantly — tone: factual, not dramatic.
- If the Exmatrikulation already happened: ask about re-registration/re-enrolment (Wiedereinschreibung) — many universities allow it within a window if the fee is settled.
- If it can't be reversed and your permit is based on studying, contact the Ausländerbehörde before they contact you, together with your university's international office — options (switching programmes, changing permit purpose) exist but shrink with silence.
- Fix the root cause: campus portal notifications on, current address everywhere, and the next Rückmeldung window in your calendar with two reminders.
