Health insurance debt piled up quietly
The situation
Between moving, job changes or a payout gap, some monthly premiums to your Krankenkasse went unpaid — and now a letter states a debt with late-payment surcharges, maybe threatening to notify authorities or downgrade your coverage to emergency-only.
The way out
Treat it as urgent — insurance debt reaches your residence status:
- Call the Krankenkasse first (or write): confirm the exact amount and period. Mistakes happen — e.g. contributions charged as "voluntary member" during a gap you thought was covered by a job.
- Can't pay at once? Ask for a payment plan (Ratenzahlung) — completely routine, and it stops the escalation while you pay it down.
- Keep current months paid while clearing the backlog — new debt on top of a plan is what breaks the goodwill.
- Know the stakes: statutory insurance can reduce you to emergency-only coverage while in arrears, and unresolved insurance debt is exactly what surfaces at permit extension time. A documented payment plan, by contrast, is acceptable to most Ausländerbehörden.
- If the debt reached Inkasso or a court order, see our Mahnung letter guide — verify the claim, pay the legitimate core, dispute inflated fees in writing.
- Once cleared, get a written confirmation of no arrears (Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigung) for your files.
