My post keeps getting returned to sender
The situation
Packages come back marked "Empfänger unbekannt" and you suspect official letters never reached you — because your name is not on the mailbox (Briefkasten) or doorbell (Klingel) at your new address.
The way out
In Germany the name on the mailbox — not the tenancy — decides delivery. Fix it today.
- Label your Briefkasten and Klingel with your exact name as written on your ID, and give that exact name to every sender. Deutsche Post and DHL return anything addressed to a name they cannot find on the box.
- Sub-letting or in a shared flat? Add your name under the main tenant's, and set up mail storage or forwarding so nothing bounces while you sort it out.
- Missed an official letter? Undelivered Behörden post (permit, Anmeldung confirmation, tax ID, court or fine notices) is serious — deadlines run whether or not you read them. Contact the sending office, explain, and ask them to resend.
- Expecting something important? Track it; if it shows "returned to sender", call the sender before the item is destroyed.
- Moving out? File a Nachsendeauftrag (mail forwarding) with Deutsche Post so post follows you for 6 to 12 months.
Rule for next time: the name label goes up the same day you get the keys — before you even register.
