No registration appointments for weeks
The situation
You need your Anmeldung urgently (bank! tax ID! residence permit!) but the online booking shows nothing free for weeks — or nothing at all.
The way out
Don't panic — work the system:
- Check the portal at odd times. Most cities release new and cancelled slots in batches — early morning (6:00–8:00) and around midnight are famous windows. Check daily; slots appear and vanish within minutes.
- Try every location. You can usually register at ANY office in your city, not just your district's. Outer-district offices have shorter queues everywhere.
- Ask about walk-in options. Some cities (Munich!) still take walk-ins with a queue number if you arrive early.
- Document everything. Screenshot the empty booking calendar with date visible. The two-week rule matters less than provable effort — offices don't fine people who visibly tried.
- Genuinely urgent? Email the office, explain the urgency (visa expiry, job start), attach your booking attempts. Many offices hold emergency slots for exactly this.
Meanwhile: an online bank account works without Anmeldung, and your employer can use a temporary tax class for the first payroll — the world doesn't stop.
