SCHUFA has a wrong entry that's blocking me
The situation
A landlord or provider refused you over your SCHUFA — but the negative mark is wrong: a paid bill still shown as open, a contract you cancelled, or an account that was never yours. Errors in SCHUFA files are common.
The way out
You have a legal right to see and correct your SCHUFA data — use it before it costs you a flat.
- Pull your free data copy first. Under GDPR (Art. 15) you are entitled to a free Datenkopie listing every entry. Request it from SCHUFA directly — not the paid products.
- Pin down the wrong entry precisely: an already-paid debt marked open, a duplicate, a contract you lawfully cancelled, or fraud in your name.
- Dispute it in writing with SCHUFA and, in parallel, with the company that reported it (the Einmelder). Attach proof — payment receipts, cancellation confirmations. They must check and correct or delete inaccurate data.
- Ask for a temporary note while it is investigated, and get written confirmation once it is fixed — you will want it for the next landlord.
- Fraudulent entry? File a police report too; identity misuse needs a paper trail to unwind.
Rule for next time: check your SCHUFA once a year — the free copy exists precisely so a stale error does not surface at the worst moment.
